Numerical Simulation of the Charge State Evolution and Energy Losses in Heavy Ion Beam-plasma Interactions
To analyse the charge state and energy evolutions of heavy ions travelling through a laser created plasma, a Monte-Carlo code has been written. A detailed account of the physical processes involved during the interaction is given here. The code is applied to the interaction of a Cu-beam with a C-plasma and with an A2-plasma.
متن کاملAn electron beam ion trap for the NSCL reaccelerator
The reacceleration of stopped fast-fragment beams or low-energy ISOL beams to the energy range of 0.3–12 MeV/nucleon allows for experiments such as low-energy Coulomb excitation and transfer reaction studies and for the precise study of astrophysical reactions. The coupling of a reaccelerator to a gas stopper at a fragmentation facility will provide rare isotope beams of nuclides not available ...
متن کاملAn electron beam ion trap for charge breeding of radioactive isotopes
Rapid charge breeding of short-lived radioactive isotopes produced in ISOL facilities or through fragment separation is a prerequisite for the viability of schemes aiming at accurate mass measurements using Penning traps and the reacceleration of such ions with compact accelerators. We have developed a new electron beam ion trap (EBIT) with short breeding times for these purposes, which is curr...
متن کاملSimulating a Maxwellian plasma using an electron beam ion trap
We describe a technique for producing a Maxwell–Boltzmann electron energy distribution using an electron beam ion trap ~EBIT!. The technique was implemented on the Lawrence Livermore EBIT to simulate Maxwellian plasmas. We discuss technical and experimental issues related to these simulations. To verify the fidelity of the quasi-Maxwellian, we have measured line emission due to dielectronic rec...
متن کاملOverview of the Electron Beam Ion Trap Program at NIST
This paper surveys the ongoing physics experiments at the Electron Beam Ion Trap (EBIT) facility at NIST, with particular attention paid to the underlying physical principles involved. In addition, some new data on the performance of our EBIT are presented, including results related to the determination of the trap width, ion temperature, and number of highly charged ions in the trap.
